Take the excursion to the lake Kel Suu located in a remote area of Naryn's south-eastern range. Enjoy the adventourus ride by 4x4-car through a rough and untouched landscape and take in the fascination of this uniquely situated mountain lake. This is at least a two day trip; about 150 km from Naryn.
Driving to Kel Suu
This excursion takes you to the fascinating lake Kel Suu. From Naryn you'll drive close to the lake on the first day. There is Jyrgals yurt camp were you spend the evening and night.
You will use the road via At Bashy and Ak Mus to the yurt camp. The drive takes 5 hours and offers amazing views of an inhospitable nature, which with its inaccessible mountains and sweeping rivers hardly allows the thought that anyone could live here.
However, shepherds are living here, grazing their herds.
The road is very rough and there are several river crossings, where there is no bridge and where the water level may be above the floorboards on even a four-wheel drive vehicle. I can't imagine anyone getting there without a driver who knows the route and knows where and how to cross the rivers.
At the lake
You'll spend a night at Jyrgal's yurt camp close to the northern shore of the lake. When you arrive at the yurt camp in the evening you may opt in for a typical shepherds meal. It consists mainly of meat. You may ask yourself why? Look around and you'll find the answer immediately: Grain and vegetables really don't grow in this area.
The next day you'll take a ride to the lake and spend some time to breath the marvellous sight. If you are lucky some eagles will check their territory or a flock of ibex is climbing the steep walls.
The yurt camp's landlord brought a boat for those who are fancy to see more of the lake. However, be aware that the boat may not be available and that you are doing this part of the trip on your own risk.

Because the lake is near the Chinese border, anyone going there needs a Border Zone Permit for the Naryn region. There are manned military checkpoints with gates on the two roads into Kel Suu, so you can't go without a permit. The officials at the checkpoints also check for passports, so if you go, take your passport with the permit.
